Slovak inflation picks up pace to 2.6% y/y in July

Growth of the consumer price index (inflation) in Slovakia accelerated to 2.6% year-on-year and 0.3% month-on-month in July. This follows four months of oscillating slightly above 2%.

It is 0.5 percentage points up on the June level when inflation returned to a three-year-low, which had also been registered in April.

“Food prices rose again slightly m/m, especially [prices] of meat, oils and bread. Due to the holiday season also the prices of non-alcoholic beverages rose, as well as of holiday packages, fuel and entrance fees to swimming pools,” Slovak statisticians highlighted.

In m/m terms, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages grew by 0.3%, with four of the nine monitored food items registering an increase, including prices of meat, oils and fats, bread and cereals. Vegetables and fruits registered a seasonal drop in prices, and these were lower also for milk, cheese and eggs. Prices in recreation and culture and transport increased on average by 0.8% in each sector.

Y/y prices increased on all 12 divisions, statisticians summed up, with food and non-alcoholic beverages prices up by 1.5%, recreation and culture by 3.1%, alcohol and tobacco by 5.1% and housing and energy by 0.4%.
