Czech foreign trade surplus widened by 3.6% on the year to CZK 31.5bn (EUR 1.2bn) in January 2013, data from the statistics office showed. The reading was above market expectations for a surplus of CZK 30bn in a Reuters poll. The statistics office revised down the foreign trade surplus for full-2012 to a record-high of CZK 309.5bn from CZK 310.8bn announced earlier and compared to CZK 191.1bn reported in 2011. Exports in January reached CZK 245.4bn, falling by 3.2% on the year. Imports declined by 4.1% y/y to CZK 213.9bn in January. The European Union is the countrys main trading partner as it accounted for 82% of the exports and 63% of the imports in January. The Czech Republics trade with EU countries showed a surplus of CZK 65bn, which was by CZK 5.4bn lower on the year. The trade gap with non-EU countries shrank by CZK 6.3bn on the year to CZK 33bn in the firs month of 2013.
