Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met with the President of the European Council on September 23, marking his third meeting with world leaders during his visit to New York for the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting, reported by Iran's Mehr News Agency, comes as part of Pezeshkian's diplomatic engagements on the sidelines of the UN gathering. Details of the discussions were not immediately available.

This encounter follows two previous meetings Pezeshkian has held with other heads of state since arriving in New York, including the president of Finland and a group of .

Pezeshkian's presence at the UN General Assembly marks a significant diplomatic outing for the Iranian president, providing opportunities for high-level discussions on international issues and bilateral relations.

The meeting with the European Council President could touch on various topics of mutual interest, including the status of the Iran nuclear deal, regional security issues, and economic relations between Iran and the European Union.

Earlier on Sepetmber 23, Pezeshkian met with members of The Elders, an independent group of global leaders, at the UN, emphasising Iran's support for actions that strengthen worldwide peace and security.

During the meeting, held on the sidelines, Pezeshkian criticised certain powerful countries for obstructing the development paths of other nations under the guise of democracy and freedom.

The Iranian president reiterated that Iran has never sought nuclear weapons, stating, "Nuclear weapons have no place in the Islamic Republic of Iran's defence doctrine."

Pezeshkian also addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza, condemning Israeli actions and expressing concern over the potential for regional escalation.

Mary Robinson, chair of The Elders and former President of Ireland, was allegedly positive about Pezeshkian's approach to various issues and expressed the group's readiness to cooperate with his administration, the Iranian media reported.
