Romania’s Prime Batteries Technology is close to launching production at its new factory near Bucharest, which will provide an initial capacity of 2,000 MWh per year in lithium-ion batteries for energy storage.
The next expansion phase will aim to increase capacity to 6,000 MWh annually, further supporting the region’s energy storage needs.
Currently 98% complete, the factory features advanced assembly lines, precision testing systems, and high-capacity management units.
"Each advancement marks a step towards providing efficient, reliable, and scalable energy storage options, reaffirming Prime Batteries’ commitment to a sustainable future," the company stated in a Facebook post.
Co-founder Adrian Polec confirmed that the facility will begin production this year on a limited basis, with a full launch expected in April-May.
"The factory is 98% ready, with equipment on-site, and we will complete assembly by late November," Polec said in an interview with Economedia. He also noted the company’s commitment to avoiding Chinese components, which has increased costs by 7%-8%.
Prime Batteries Technology, the only lithium-ion battery manufacturer in Romania and Southeastern Europe, has gradually expanded its operations. Its initial production capacity was around 300 MWh annually. In 2022, the company partnered with EIT InnoEnergy—an EU-backed entity—to accelerate expansion, making EIT InnoEnergy a shareholder.
The factory recently delivered its first energy storage battery to Romania’s National Energy System. Installed last summer at a Transelectrica station near Bucharest, this 7 MW, 6 MWh unit supports grid stability and regulatory services.
