The largest opposition party, centrist Progressive Slovakia, maintains a narrow lead of 21.7% ahead of the ruling Smer party (21.2%) of the populist Prime Minister Robert Fico.
The latest March poll by the AKO agency for commercial television station Joj 24 also shows that Smer’s key ally, conservative centre-left Hlas would collect 12.3%, while non-parliamentary neofascist Republika would enter the parliament with 7%.
Opposition parties, Christian Democratic KDH (7.8%), populist right-wing Slovakia (7.3%) and neoliberal SaS (6.6%) would re-enter the parliament. Four parties would finish just below the 5% parliamentary threshold – ethnic Hungarian Aliancia (4.4%), centre-right Democrats (4%) and the junior ruling coalition party, far-right SNS (4%).
Fico recently managed to restore the parliamentary majority of his left-right ruling coalition, but the signs of disunity re-emerged almost immediately when SNS leader Andrej Danko criticised public officials backed by Smer amid the cabinet reshuffle which averted the immediate prospect of early elections.
Parliamentary session resumed on March 25, but so far the ruling coalition has not been able to elect a new chairman of parliament, a position which has been vacant since spring 2024.
