Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on September 28 offered condolences for the death of Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, calling the Israeli attack on Beirut's southern suburbs an expression of "reckless desire" to expand the conflict.

Hezbollah leader Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike on southern Beirut in the underground headquarters of the proscribed terrorist group by the US, along with a senior Iranian military officer and other top officials from the group.

In a statement, Sudani said, "In a new sinful assault and a crime that confirms the Zionist entity's transgression of all red lines, the Secretary-General of the Lebanese Hezbollah, His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, was martyred on the path of truth," INA reported the Iraqi leader as saying.

He added that "the criminal act that targeted the southern suburbs yesterday expresses the reckless desire to expand the conflict, at the expense of all the peoples of the region and their security and stability."

Sudani reiterated his warning about "the responsibility of UN and international organisations, permanent member states of the UN Security Council, and all influential countries in the region to deter aggression and stop the ethnic genocide of Palestinians that the occupation has been practising for decades."

The Iraqi Prime Minister reiterated, without directly naming Israel, said: "Iraq's principled position of standing with the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples, a position based on international legitimacy and humanitarian and moral principles that necessitate supporting fraternal peoples clinging to their land and civilisational existence."

He concluded his statement by referring to the former Hezbollah leader as a “martyr,” a prominent feature of praise in Shi’ite Muslim countries.

"Mercy and satisfaction for the martyr Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and glory and elevation for all martyrs of Lebanon, martyrs of Palestine, and martyrs of the righteous confrontation with the forces of aggression and misguidance."

Sudani expressed confidence that "the peoples are the ones who will ultimately triumph."

Iraq, along with neighbouring Syria, announced three days of public mourning following the announcement of Nasrallah’s killing.
