Lithuania was ranked 18th in the EU according to the number of banks operating in the country, European Commission announced. There were total of 91 banks operating in Lithuania as of end-March. In Latvia 30 banks operated, which put Latvia in 23rd position, together with Slovakia. In Estonia total of 17 banks were operating, which puts Estonia last among the EU countries. Total amount of assets of Lithuanian banks amounted to EUR 24.2bn or 78.8% of GDP, in Latvia total assets stood at EUR 28.4bn or 141.4% of GDP, and in Estonia total assets amounted to EUR 19.1bn, or 119.4% of GDP. In Europe the top ranking was Germany with 1,893 financial institutions, with total amount of assets of EUR 8.5 trillion. Austria ranked 2nd with 765 banks, followed by Italy with 740 banks. There were total of 8,018 banks operating in the EU as of end-March, with total assets of EUR 46.8 trillion. |
