In the wake of President Yoon Suk-yeol’s unexpected declaration of martial law late on December 3, his entire Cabinet and senior aides have now offered to step down.

The unprecedented move comes after a chaotic morning in the nation’s capital that has thrown the South Korean government into disarray, sparking widespread public and also political outrage.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo convened an emergency meeting with senior figures from the ruling People Power Party (PPP) and key aides at 14:00 local time on December 4 in Seoul.

The closed-door discussions lasted around 90 minutes and were attended by political figures including Minister of Government Policy Coordination Bang Ki-sun, People Power Party Chair Han Dong-hoon, and Yoon’s Chief of Staff Chung Jin-suk.

Following the meeting, both Prime Minister Han and Chair Han travelled to the presidential office in the city for discussions with President Yoon.

At the time of writing no announcement on the outcome of those talks has been released, although should Prime Minister Han have asked the president to step down – a move that would more than likely prove hugely popular nationwide – it would save both the party and the country the embarrassment of a possible impeachment vote.
