Florence stands with jailed Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, the City of Florence said on April 26 in a press release.

On April 27, the facade of Palazzo Vecchio, which serves as the town hall to the Italian city, lit up with the words: “We stand for Ekrem Imamoglu. We stand for democracy in Turkey.”

The city administration said it aimed to express its closeness to the Turkish community in the town and to request the release of Imamoglu, chief political opponent to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who since March 19 has been in prison facing what he says are politically-motivated false charges of wrongdoing.

Mayor of Florence Sara Funaro (@sarafunaro) and Member of European Parliament (MEP) for Central Italy Dario Nardella (@DarioNardella) also attended the illumination of the facade in Piazza Signoria square.

Funaro was in June 2024 elected as the first woman mayor of the historical city, replacing ex-mayor Nardella who was elected to the European Parliament in July 2024.

Together with Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo and the association of European mayors, Nardella has promoted a campaign in favour of Imamoglu's release. Florence and many European cities have signed up to the campaign.
