Russia's Kazan Federal University (KFU) has opened additional service points after Iranian students clashed while queuing for migration documents, local authorities said on November 24.

The incident, which occurred outside the university's external affairs department, led to the arrest of two Iranian students, one of whom allegedly pushed a police officer during the detention, according to regional investigators.

KFU responded by announcing three new service locations for international students to process their migration documents, aiming to prevent similar incidents caused by long queues.

"The university will open a mobile service point on University Village Street on Monday to serve students living on campus," a KFU spokesperson said. Additional windows will also open at the main office on Gvardeyskaya Street, serving students living off-campus.

The Investigative Committee of Russia's Tatarstan Republic has initiated criminal proceedings against one student for allegedly using force against a law enforcement officer.

Unofficial reports, however, suggested that the students' argument was with the visa centre officials and over the cancellation of their appointment for submitting the documents.

After videos were released showing police officers beating the students with batons, Iran's Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali called for disciplinary action against the officers involved.

He stated on social media platform X that such treatment of Iranian citizens "must be condemned" and Russian officials must be held accountable for such unfortunate events. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is personally monitoring the situation with Iranian students, Jalali added.

He later reported that the detained Iranian students had been released and were in satisfactory condition. According to him, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was monitoring the situation.

"The university management has decided to open three additional points for submitting documents. One of them will also be located near the KFU Department of External Relations," the university's source said.
